On a winter day in 1975, Tim Brotzman found himself standing in awe under an old Hamamelis mollis growing at The RHS Wisley Gardens in England, the fragrant flowers like yellow stars beneath the canopy of sheltering oaks. Having never seen

anything like this growing in Ohio, and supported by other witch hazel enthusiasts from around the world, he set out on a quest which has resulted in what is undoubtedly the largest

collection in the US with nearly 200 unique taxa. These plants are used not only as a reference collection but serve as source material for the 2000 plants produced annually by Brotzman’s Nursery, Inc.. Join him as he discusses this fascinating genus in a program titled “What Did Arnold Promise?”
