In Memory of Dr. Darrel Apps (1938–2025)

It is with heartfelt sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and esteemed IPPS Eastern Region member, Dr. Darrel A. Apps, who passed away on May 21, 2025, at the age of 86.

Darrel’s name is synonymous with excellence in horticulture. A Wisconsin native raised on a dairy farm in Wild Rose, he built a lifelong legacy in the world of plant propagation and breeding—most notably through his groundbreaking work in daylily hybridization. Over his career, Darrel introduced more than 450 cultivars, including the widely acclaimed Happily Ever Appster series. His work was featured in major publications like The New York Times, which dubbed him “Dr. Daylily” in 2004.

But to IPPS members, Darrel was far more than a breeder. He was a longtime supporter and architect of our Society—serving as:

  • President of the IPPS Eastern Region (2006–2007)

  • Executive Secretary-Treasurer

  • Fellow of the Eastern Region (1987)

  • Recipient of the Eastern Region Award of Merit (2010)

  • Founding Director of the IPPS Eastern Region Foundation

He often said IPPS was his “most favorite annual conference,” citing the Society’s unique “complex matrix” of plant professionals, educators, growers, and innovators. He believed deeply in the value of sharing knowledge, and he lived that belief through decades of mentorship, service, and thoughtful leadership.

Even in retirement, Darrel remained active—hybridizing new plants, mentoring young growers, and enhancing his community in Wild Rose through service and beautification projects. His humility, humor, and passion made him beloved across generations of horticulturists.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Marilyn, his daughters Lisa and Gretchen, his grandchildren, and all who were lucky enough to learn from or work alongside him.

Darrel’s legacy lives on not only in his cultivars and written work, but in the relationships he nurtured and the knowledge he so generously shared.
