2025 IPPS International Tour: North Island, New Zealand - Part I
20 June 2025
An Unforgettable Journey Through Horticulture, Culture, and Community
From the olive groves and vineyards of Waiheke Island to the geothermal wonders of Rotorua, the 2025 IPPS International Tour gave members a rare and enriching view into the vibrant horticultural world of New Zealand.
We’re proud to share two beautifully written reflections from Eastern Region members Bill Barnes and Dr. Robert Geneve, who joined the international group on this immersive tour of the North Island. Their accounts offer both detailed daily highlights and personal impressions—showcasing why these tours are such a valued part of the IPPS experience.
Reflections from the Road
Bill Barnes captures the camaraderie, the plant discoveries, and the moments of awe that made this tour truly special. From his write-up:
“The people of New Zealand are wonderful… gracious and most hospitable. You will be rewarded handsomely.”
Bill details site visits to:
Christie Ralphs’ Nourish Gardens and Allpress Olive Plantation
Auckland and Hamilton Botanic Gardens
Nurseries including Scot Base, Ardmore, Rainbow Park, Van Liers, and Timberlands
Hobbiton Movie Set and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Reserve
He also touches on the people who made the trip memorable, both fellow members and our exceptional Kiwi hosts.

Dr. Robert Geneve offers a plant-focused perspective with insights into conservation efforts, innovative nursery practices, and rare species sightings. He writes:
“It was great… one of my goals was to find and photograph Gunnera densiflora—and we did.”

Behind-the-scenes views at propagation-focused nurseries
