Dog Days & Conference Days Ahead

Dog Days & Conference Days Ahead

Greetings International Plant Production Society Eastern Region:

Hot. Humid. Heat advisor. Storms. This is the norm here in Delaware right now and other parts. We are officially in the dog days of summer. July 3 – August 11 according to the Farmer’s Almanac. Having to do with the star Sirius, the dog star, but now basically referencing the extreme heat/humidity in the Northern Hemisphere. It reminds me of being at my grandmothers and drinking lemonade, sitting in front of the fan – no one had A/C in those days!

For those in horticulture it means managing your mist system carefully, making sure plants are wilting from drought and not heat stress and checking that your staff are all staying safe in the heat. Maybe you’re like me and having to put some manual shade in place to cover some rooted cuttings or maybe you’re checking an app after hours to make sure your cooling system is still working.

For IPPS it means one month closer to our annual conference in Louisville, KY. The website has been updated with more conference information, with registration opening within the next week or so.
Your challenge for this month: invite someone to Louisville, KY for the ER annual conference, October 14-17.  Your second challenge for this month: invite a local nursery or supplier to sponsor our conference.  Details in the newsletter.

We’re also thrilled to welcome back Margot Bridgen, who is stepping in to support the society during Savanah Tanner’s maternity leave beginning August 1. As many of you remember and some may not know, Margot previously served as Executive Secretary-Treasurer with great dedication and we’re grateful to have her back overseeing conference logistics and operations onsite in Louisville. Please join me in congratulating Savanah on the upcoming addition to her family and in warmly welcoming Margot back into the IPPS ER community!

Your QUIZ question: what plant am I standing next to?
